How to Read a Mooring Rope Certificate

The certificate is what turns a coil of rope into a traceable mooring line. At an inspection it carries as much weight as the rope itself.
The fields that should be there
- Manufacturer and place of manufacture
- Material and fibre type, including grade where relevant
- Construction — number of strands, braid type, cover if applicable
- Nominal diameter and, where stated, circumference
- Length, and whether measured spliced or unspliced
- Batch or production number for traceability
- Line design break force, or the tested break force, and the test standard used
- Termination details — eye length, splice type, thimble if fitted
- Date of manufacture and date of test
Spliced or unspliced — check this first
A break force figure for unspliced rope is higher than the same rope with a spliced eye. If the certificate does not state which was tested, the figure is ambiguous, and an inspector is entitled to treat it as such. For mooring lines the figure that matters is the new spliced line's design break force.
Test standard matters
ISO 2307 is the common reference for determining rope break force. A certificate that quotes a number without stating the standard used to obtain it invites the question of how it was obtained. Ask for it at ordering rather than at inspection.
Traceability to the physical line
A certificate that cannot be tied to the specific line on deck does not do its job. The batch or serial number should appear on the certificate and on the line's tag, and the line record on board should carry both, along with the date it entered service and its position.
This is where most findings originate: not a missing certificate, but a certificate that cannot be matched to any particular rope in the locker.
What OCIMF documentation does and does not mean
Documentation aligned with MEG4 shows that the information a mooring line needs — material, construction, dimensions, break force, traceability — is recorded in the expected form. It is not an OCIMF approval or endorsement of the product, and OCIMF does not operate a product approval scheme of that kind.
Be cautious of any supplier describing rope as 'OCIMF approved' or 'OCIMF certified'. The accurate phrasing is that lines are supplied with documentation supporting MEG4 requirements.
Ask for it in the purchase order
Every field above is easy to obtain at order stage and difficult to obtain afterwards. Listing the required documentation in the RFQ costs nothing and removes the most common cause of an otherwise acceptable line failing an inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
- At minimum a manufacturer certificate and a break force test certificate stating material, construction, diameter, length, batch, the tested figure and the test standard, plus termination details. Classification society certification is added where the vessel or charterer requires it.
