Mooring Rope Inspection Guide

Most mooring lines are retired on the basis of an inspection, not a test. The quality of that inspection is therefore the quality of the decision.
Inspect zones, not lengths
Damage is not distributed evenly along a mooring line. It concentrates where the line contacts something: the fairlead, the pedestal roller, the drum, the bitt, and the eye. A line can be in excellent condition over ninety percent of its length and be at retirement condition in a two-metre section.
Practical consequence: an inspection that walks the whole line quickly and looks hard at the contact zones is far more useful than a uniform slow pass along the entire length.
External damage — what to look for
- Abrasion: flattened, fuzzed or polished surface fibres, especially glazing that suggests heat
- Cuts and snags in the cover or in individual strands
- Glazing or fusion, indicating friction heat — particularly important on HMPE
- Inconsistent diameter — localised swelling or necking
- Pulled strands, distortion or loss of the original lay
- Chemical staining, oil or paint contamination
- Damage or distortion at the splice and at the eye
Internal condition
Open the strands gently at several points, including at least one contact zone, and look inside. Internal powdering, broken fibres and dust are signs of internal abrasion between strands, which happens as the rope works under cyclic load. A line can look acceptable outside and be significantly degraded inside.
Never force a rope open in a way that damages it, and never open a line under tension.
Record it so the record is usable
An inspection that is not recorded against the specific line is nearly worthless, because it cannot be compared with the previous one. Each line should carry an identity, and the record should show its date in service, its position on board, its cumulative use, and each inspection result.
- Line identity and position at the time of inspection
- Date, inspector, and whether the line was in use or spare
- Findings by zone, not just an overall verdict
- Photographs of any significant finding
- Action taken — continue, rotate end-for-end, downgrade, retire
Rotation and downgrading
Because wear concentrates at contact zones, rotating a line end-for-end, or moving it to a position with a less demanding load and geometry, can extend useful life. This is legitimate practice as long as it is recorded and as long as the downgraded position genuinely imposes lower demands. It is not legitimate as a way of keeping a line that should be retired.
When to escalate
If an inspection finds damage that the inspector cannot confidently categorise — particularly heat glazing, internal powdering or splice distortion — the line should be taken out of service pending a decision, not left in place until the next port. The cost of an unnecessary retirement is a rope. The cost of the alternative can be a person.
