Rope Diameter vs Breaking Load

Diameter is the most commonly quoted figure in rope purchasing and one of the least meaningful on its own. Two 64 mm ropes can differ in break load by a factor of several.
Why diameter alone tells you almost nothing
Break load is a function of fibre type, fibre grade, construction and manufacturing quality as well as diameter. A 12-strand HMPE line and a 3-strand polypropylene line at the same nominal diameter are not comparable products in any respect that matters.
Nominal diameter is also measured differently across constructions and can vary under load, so even the diameter figure itself is less exact than it appears.
Relative strength at equal diameter
This ranking is for orientation only. Use the actual certified figure for the specific rope, construction and grade being offered — never a generic table — when making a selection decision.

Diameter still matters — just not for strength
- Winch drum capacity: the drum must store the required length at that diameter
- Fairlead and roller geometry: bend radius affects both handling and rope life
- Grip and handling: very small diameters at high load are hard and unsafe to handle
- Wear surface: a larger diameter distributes contact pressure over more material
What to specify instead
Specify the target LDBF first, then fibre and construction, then let diameter fall out of those. Cross-check the resulting diameter against the drum capacity and fairlead geometry. If the diameter does not fit, change fibre or construction — not the design load.
