When Should Mooring Ropes Be Replaced?

There is no single number of years. Retirement is driven by a combination of measured condition, accumulated use and defined events — and by whichever comes first.
Three independent triggers
A line should be retired when any one of the following is reached, not when all of them are.
- Condition: inspection finds damage that meets the retirement criteria in the vessel's line management plan
- Accumulated use: the line has reached the residual strength or service limit defined for it
- Event: the line has been subjected to a defined overload, shock load, heat or chemical exposure
Condition-based retirement
This is the most common trigger and the most judgement-dependent. Severe localised abrasion, heat glazing or fusion, cut strands, internal powdering, distortion of the lay and damage at or adjacent to the splice all point towards retirement. The specific thresholds belong in the vessel's own criteria, which is why generic advice cannot replace them.
Use-based retirement
Synthetic ropes lose strength progressively through cyclic loading even without visible damage. Modern practice tracks this through the line record so that a line is retired on accumulated use before it reaches a condition that would be visible. This is the part most often neglected, because a rope that looks fine feels wasteful to replace.
Event-based retirement
Some events end a line's service immediately regardless of appearance. A line that has been shock loaded in a parting incident elsewhere in the pattern, run over a seized roller and heated, contaminated with an aggressive chemical, or subjected to a load beyond its design should be withdrawn and assessed rather than returned to service.
Planning instead of reacting
Replacement bought in advance is cheaper, better specified and better documented than replacement bought after a port state control observation. For fleets, the practical approach is a rolling programme: the line record shows which lines approach their limits, replacements are specified against the ship design MBL, and delivery is scheduled to a port on the rotation rather than the nearest one.
It also avoids the worst outcome of urgent purchasing — a mismatched line dropped into an otherwise consistent pattern, where the difference in stiffness means it will not share load with its neighbours.
