Bulk terminals wear rope differently

A bulk carrier at a loading berth changes draught continuously, so the mooring lines are tended throughout the call and the fairlead contact point moves constantly. Add abrasive cargo dust and the result is external abrasion damage rather than the internal fatigue you see on a long steady mooring.

That changes the inspection focus and the fibre choice. Abrasion-tolerant construction and proper chafe protection matter more here than the last few percent of break load, and a line that looks acceptable from the drum can be badly worn in the section that sits in the fairlead during loading.
